Booking Shows Part 1 With No Manager (VIDEO)
Are you a musician eager to book your own shows without the help of a manager? You’re in the right place! Here are three straightforward tips to help you navigate the booking process and make a name for yourself as a performing artist.
Tip #1: Build Your Skills on Stage
If you’re just starting out, aim to participate in 1-2 open mic nights each week for at least three months. This consistent practice will sharpen your performance skills and boost your stage presence.
Plus, these events offer a chance to meet fellow musicians. Form connections and explore opportunities for future collaborations.
Tip #2: Find the Right Opportunities
Steer clear of shows that require you to pay for stage time. Many of these events cater to performers who are also paying to be seen, which can lead to a crowd made up mostly of other artists.
Instead, set your sights on places where you’ll perform for an audience that comes to enjoy the music. Even if it’s a small gathering of ten people, it’s a wonderful chance to showcase your talent and potentially win over new fans.
The only exceptions are when your payment goes to a door person or sound tech.
Tip #3: Expand Your Reach
Connect with artists in other cities who might be interested in joining you for a show. Use social media platforms and city-specific Facebook groups to engage with like-minded musicians.
Once you find someone who sparks your interest, propose a show in Chicago and invite them to perform. Be the friendly collaborator who doesn’t charge them to join.
Working with artists from different places will bring fresh energy to your shows and can help draw a larger crowd.
