Welcome to Untold Stories Recordings!
I’m excited to be your go-to recording studio in Chicago, helping musicians like you create music that stands out. Today, we’re diving into the first step of the music-making process: recording.
Understanding the recording process will give you a clear idea of what to expect, how to prepare, and how to make the most of your time in the studio. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
Understanding the Recording Process
Recording is the foundation of your song—it’s where I capture your unique performance. Every detail matters, and I focus on creating an environment that lets you sound your absolute best.
Key Focus Areas
- Room Setup The way you or your instrument is positioned in the studio makes a big difference in how the final recording sounds. Think of it like setting the stage for a play—the right setup ensures everything falls into place. I take the time to find the best positioning to suit your music.
- Microphone Selection and Positioning Microphones are the heart of recording, and choosing the right one is essential. I tailor the setup based on the specific qualities of your voice or instrument. Whether you’re aiming for a deep, resonant tone or a close, intimate feel, I adjust the microphone’s distance and angle to capture your sound perfectly.
Technical Aspects of Recording
I use a combination of analog and digital tools to bring out the best in your music:
- Analog Hardware: I’ll run your performance through Neve preamps, apply light EQ, and use either FET or optical compression or both to shape the tone.
- Digital Magic: The creative possibilities are endless. At this stage, though, the main focus is on getting a clean and authentic recording. I might use some light effects to enhance the sound, but most of the digital processing and effects come later during the production and mixing phase. My goal is to ensure the recording itself is strong on its own and ready for the next steps.
Recording Timeframes
Here’s a breakdown of typical recording times:
- Vocals for Singers and Rappers: Recording over an instrumental usually takes 1-4 hours.
- Bands and Instruments: Each instrument takes about 1-4 hours, with multiple takes so we can layer the sounds to create a fuller sounding mix.
Coming prepared helps keep things efficient, but if you’re experimenting or working out ideas, it’s always good to allow extra time.
